The main purpose of background checks is to crosscheck the facts provided by the applicant.

Mostly background checks are conducted for positions of trust where the candidate is responsible for important tasks. If an employee is found to have modified his credentials illegally then his abilities are judged if the modification is negligible. But if it is unavoidable, companies cannot jeopardize their reputation by hiring a fraud.

•    Academics: Employers get to know any deviation between the claim by the applicant and the facts. In this competitive era, applicants are likely to have certifications of workshops, internships etc. and the originality of these certificates is difficult to ascertain. Background checks are the stamp that ensures that the employers have accurate information.

•    Criminal: applicants almost always lie about their criminal records if it exists out of shame or any other reason. But since this aspect is covered in the checks, employers know exactly who they are dealing with.

•    Character: Usually background checks include a reference character check that tells the employers about the character of the applicant. If the applicant has any socially unacceptable behavior it can be spotted in the interview.

•    Employment history: applicants, to a certain degree, inflate their experience in the field to use it as leverage.  Higher experience is always preferred by the employers but it is difficult to identify the duration. A background reveals the duration and companies where the applicant has worked at.
